The Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development (RCMRD) is participating in the Regional Inception Workshop for of the Biodiversity and Protected Areas Management (BIOPAMA) Programme. Director General Dr Emmanuel Nkurunziza and GIT Lead Ngugi Kimani are representing the Centre in the meeting that commenced on April 17th and concludes on April 20. The workshop is in Johannesburg, South Africa.

BIOPAMA aims to improve the long-term conservation and sustainable use of natural resources in African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries, in protected areas and surrounding communities. It is an initiative of the ACP Group of States financed by the European Union’s 11th European Development Fund (EDF), jointly implemented by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission (JRC).

This workshop is the launch of the second phase of BIOPAMA (2017-2023) in the Southern Africa Region which is building on the first five years of activities (2012-2017) financed by the 10th EDF, and aims to provide tools for data and information management, services for improving the knowledge and capacity for protected areas planning and decision making as well as funding opportunities for specific site-based actions.

The specific objectives of the workshop include Identifying key regional priorities and expectations for the BIOPAMA programme in the Southern Africa region and securing buy-in and commitments from relevant governmental and inter-governmental partners to the overall objectives, priority activities and expected results from the programme, including the establishment of an Observatory for Biodiversity and Protected Areas serving the Southern African Region; consulting key technical partners on synergies with other existing/planned initiatives in the region, and identifying potential areas of collaboration as well as identifying focal points in the relevant institutions for different aspects of BIOPAMA implementation.
