The Professional courses are for those who already have previous qualifications or are employed and wish to boost their careers, are seeking employment after graduating from university or tertiary colleges and wish to acquire hands on new technology skills to improve their CVs or those currently practicing but wish to acquire skills on current technologies. These courses act as refresher courses and an introduction to new technology. We offer several courses.
Short Courses target those who require basic knowledge in a specific field and do not require entry level qualification. These courses equip the candidates with knowledge and skills which are required in most professional. They are also a foundation for college and university education.
Introduction to Earth Observation (Remote Sensing- RS)/ Digital Image Processing
Preamble: Spatial distribution of Natural Resources such as water, forests, arable land and even minerals; their availability and accessibility determines who gets them and who doesn’t. Proper understanding of their distribution can go a long way in enacting laws and policies that will ensure sound management, equitable sharing and environmental protection as we go about their exploitation. This understanding can only be achieved if their spatial distribution is properly documented visa viz morphological and demographic characteristics of the ground in which they appear. Remote Sensing and Digital Image Processing uses satellite Images which can help us capture large areas of the ground with its characteristic and features. The images can then be processed; the resources can be located on the images, digitized and compiled into GIS layers which will assist in their management.
This is a 10-day course and covers the following:
- Opening and displaying an image
- Importing image
- Understanding bands and their usage (Land sat 7 & 8)
- Layer stacking, Mosaicking images
- Subset image, Image rectification and geo-referencing
- Resampling and interpolation of image
- Change detection, Image Classification
- DEM and STRM and generation of contours
- NDVI
- Principle Component Analysis & Tussled cap
Open Source Tools Data and Applications
Open-source data and tools offer the possibility to monitor our planet in a spatial and temporal extent. RCMRD seeks to bring the requisite technical capabilities to member States so that they can harness these opportunities. This course has been prepared in that spirit. The Training will provide participants with the opportunity to develop crucial skills required for spatial data processing to address thematic challenges or any particular challenge of interest). Throughout the learning week participants will focus on developing skills in natural resource mapping using Earth Observation (EO)/Remotely Sensed (RS) data. Many different, complementary and sometimes overlapping tools will be presented to provide an overview of the existing arena of open source software available for spatial data processing. Participants are expected to gain knowledge from a series of lectures and practical sessions. It also provides a platform for the participants to communicate with experienced practitioners and industry experts as well as widen their professional networks.
Course Objectives
The training will equip participants with skills to access, process and analyze various open datasets using recent and up-to-date available tools. Most importantly, it will allow them to start using remote sensing data from the various platforms, with continuous practice during the learning week, participants will get more familiar with the EO data as well as developing competencies in areas, including;
- Work with earth observation and Geo-Information technologies
- Use of open source data and tools
- Earth observation data applications
- Applications of the 2.5 Meter datasets
- Automated segmentation and merging of the data
Expected Outcomes
- How to access open source data
- Capability to pre-process and analyze remote sensing/GIS data
- Use open-source tools in the analysis of GIS and remote sensing data
- Build institutional linkages of participating institutions as well as technical capacities
