RCMRD in conjunction with the IGAD Climate Prediction and Applications Centre (ICPAC) are implementing the Monitoring for Environment and Security in Africa (MESA)
project. In an effort to build regional capacity in land degradation assessment, natural habitat conservation and forest monitoring, the two institutions conducted a five-day training on land degradation in Juba, South Sudan from 6-10 February, 2017. The participants were drawn from various ministries and institutions in South Sudan. The land degradation training focused on assessing the extent and severity of land degradation in South Sudan. The participants were trained on the processing chain used to derive the land degradation product. This involved the use of open source GIS software, Quantum GIS (QGIS), together with other supporting accessories developed by RCMRD necessary to perform the data processing.
