RCMRD Highlights the Role of Space Technologies in Climate Action and Disaster Risk Reduction at DataFest 2026

The Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development (RCMRD) participated in the Global Data Festival and Kenya Space Expo & Conference 2026 (DataFest 2026), contributing to important conversations on human-centered data, inclusion, innovation, and investment for sustainable development. The event brought together policymakers, development practitioners, researchers, technology experts, and data communities to explore how data-driven solutions can address some of today's most pressing development challenges.

As part of the event, RCMRD moderated a session titled "Harnessing Data and Space Technologies for Climate Action and Disaster Risk Reduction," which looked into the critical role of Earth Observation (EO), satellite imagery, and geospatial analytics in supporting climate resilience and disaster preparedness. The discussion highlighted the growing importance of timely and accurate data in helping governments, institutions, and communities anticipate, prepare for, and respond to climate-related risks such as droughts, floods, and other extreme weather events. Speakers demonstrated how space-based technologies are strengthening early warning systems, enhancing climate monitoring, and supporting evidence-based decision-making at national and local levels across Africa.
The session also underscored the need for increased investment in data infrastructure, partnerships, and capacity development to ensure that climate and disaster information reaches those who need it most. Participants emphasized that effective climate action requires not only access to high-quality data but also the ability to translate that information into actionable insights that support resilience-building and sustainable development outcomes.
The one week conference saw RCMRD showcase its geospatial products, services, and ongoing initiatives at its exhibition booth, engaging participants on the Centre's work in Earth Observation, climate monitoring, disaster risk reduction, natural resource management, and geospatial capacity development. The interactions provided an opportunity to demonstrate how geospatial technologies can support informed decision-making and contribute to addressing regional and global development challenges.
RCMRD remains committed to advancing the use of data and space technologies for sustainable development and looks forward to strengthening partnerships that promote innovation, resilience, and evidence-based decision-making across Africa.
