Project 18: Land Cover Mapping for Botswana Using the Africover Classification.

ITEM DESCRIPTION
Introduction Undertaking Land Cover mapping of a country as expansive as Botswana using conventional methods would indeed require a colossal investment that ordinarily remains beyond the affordability of many Third World countries.  Remote Sensing, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Global Positioning Systems (GPS) are modern mapping techniques that not only ensure rapid and up to date map development but also ensure significant budgetary reductions in the overall project investment.  The FAO Africover E.A project has developed a extensive land use / land cover classification system that will ensure standardized and uniform geodetic and classification systems in Eastern and Southern African countries.  It is therefore important that most, if not all the countries in the region be mapped based on these established parameters especially for purposes of updating national land use / land cover maps as well as allowing better cross border resource assessment and monitoring.
Objectives To develop an updated land use / land cover map of Botswana in accordance with the FAO Africover E.A classification system. To utilize cost effective high resolution satellite imagery to develop a national land use / land cover map for Botswana. Train nationals from mapping agencies in Botswana in modern Remote Sensing and GIS techniques developed by the FAO Africover Project
Justification Most land use / land cover maps in Africa are not only out dated but are non-homogeneous in their classification both with nations and among neighbouring nations.  This situation has greatly stifled sound national and regional resource planning and management.  Uniform and standardized mapping approaches such as that developed by the FAO Africover E.A project will therefore be the true panacea of solving most of national and regional natural resource planning problems that have persisted in Africa.  This project therefore aims to commence a process of  standardizing Botswana’s national land use / land cover maps to homogeneity with its neighbours for the sustainable national and regional natural resource planning and management.
Target beneficiaries Botswana and its regional neighbours
Inputs Topographic and thematic maps, remote sensing data, hardware and software and skilled manpower.
Outputs Updated and standardized National land use / land cover map of Botswana Trained nationals from mapping agencies in Botswana
Evaluation Progressive reports, databases
Budget The project is estimated to cost US$250,000.
Risks/ Assumptions The project will be undertaken with assumption that funds are available. It is hoped that the right targets for the training will be availed to the training. These are mainly decision makers together with their immediate technical advisors.
