Project 11: Land Use and Land Cover Mapping of South-western Sudan (South and North Kordofan Regions) for Natural Resources Assessment

ITEM DESCRIPTION
Introduction The Centre was awarded a contract to implement the above study during the preceding plan period as part of its contribution to the socio-economic development of one of its member states. The South Kordofan and North Kordofan Regions are found in the southern part of Sudan, an area that has been dodged by civil strife for a period of about two decades. The civil conflicts and various environmental problems have contributed negatively to the social welfare of the residents of these regions. In order to evaluate the socio-economic situation of these regions, it is imperative that an in-depth assessment of the available natural resources is carried out. The study area lies between latitudes 10o 15’ - 14o 30’ N and longitudes 29o 15’ – 32o 30’ E with an estimated aerial coverage of 167131.25 km2.  Several million dollars will be required to conventionally carry out a natural resources assessment study of such an expansive area. It is in view of this that modern techniques such as Remote Sensing (RS), Geographical Information System (GIS) and Global Positioning System (GPS) among others will be employed in the study
Objectives The overall objective is to assess and map above ground natural resources (land use/land cover, drainage, etc) as means of generating information required for socio-economic development within the administrative regions of the study area. Specific objectives include: Acquisition of multi-temporal satellite images of the study area; Development of databases of the available above ground natural resources within the study area; Production of natural resources base maps; Training of the nationals as part of capacity building of the natural resources management specialists within the study area in particular and the whole country in general; and Provision of technical consultancy for the procurement of appropriate hardware and software necessary for continued planning and management of natural resources in Sudan.
Justification The civil conflicts and various environmental problems have contributed negatively to the social welfare of the residents of southern Sudan. In order to evaluate the socio-economic situation of these regions, it is imperative that an in-depth assessment of the available natural resources is carried out. The study area lying between latitudes 10o 15’ - 14o 30’ N and longitudes 29o 15’ – 32o 30’ E covering about 167131.25 km2 is quite expansive and hence will need several million dollars to conventionally carry out a natural resources assessment study of such an expansive area. It is in view of this that modern techniques such as Remote Sensing (RS), Geographical Information System (GIS) and Global Positioning System (GPS) among others will be employed in the study. The Centre is implementing this study as part of its contribution to the socio-economic development of one of its member states.
Target beneficiaries The target beneficiaries are the national government of Sudan, nationals of southern Sudan, as well as national and international institutions working in southern Sudan
Inputs Topographic and thematic maps, remote sensing data, hardware and software and skilled manpower
Outputs Outputs are trained personnel, developed capacity of natural resource scientists in Sudan, databases, networks, maps and reports.
Evaluation Progressive reports, trained personnel, databases
Budget The project is estimated to cost, US$103,762, out of which about 40% has been spent during the preceding plan period and the remaining 60% will be spent during the first year of the plan period.
Risks/ Assumptions Adequate personnel in geo-spatial technologies, availability of necessary equipment and relevant software, availability of data, up-to-date security situation.
