Maintenance of optical mechanical surveying instruments

This course is designed to provide participants with skills in the care, service and simple maintenance of surveying instruments. Participants will also be introduced to the procedures in carrying out routine adjustments of instruments. This course has two levels(I and II)

Applicants must be technicians specializing in the field of surveying , mapping , mining, civil and agricultural engineering with good knowledge of technical drawing and must have attended level one course to go to level two

The Information Technology Training Centre Training Schedule

Since its establishment the ITTC has registered phenomenal growth, and in a span of 4years over 2000 participants have been trained in a wide range of IT courses. These participants comprise of individual clients, clients from corporate organisations, government ministries and institutions, intergovernmental organisations and participants from RCMRD’s member states.
Among the local organisations/institutions we have provided training for are:

  • Electoral Commission of Kenya (ECK)

  • Nairobi City Council

  • International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE)

  • Ministry of Agriculture – Fisheries Department

  • National Security and Intelligence Services

  • Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE)

  • The Kenya Police

  • Ministry of Local Government

Our range of courses


Our range of courses has expanded remarkably, from an initial five End-user courses to eighteen part-time and full-time courses. These courses are in the categories, End-user, Professional, Technical, Career and Corporate. The range of courses is as shown in the table. Our faculty has also expanded from two lecturers in March 2001 to a very professional faculty comprising of 12 full-time lecturers and 3 part-time lecturers.

Collaboration


The ITTC has in the last two years partnered with reputable local and international institutions and universities to provide its clients with premier IT courses and certifications. Such partnerships are with:

  • Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) with whom we signed an mou in August 2001.
  • he Institute for the Management of Information Systems (IMIS) who accredited the ITTC as a teaching Centre in June 2003.

 

Further collaborations are envisaged with other local and international institutions and IT certification bodies such as Microsoft, Cisco, CompTia and VUE. The Centre is also registered with the Directorate of Industrial Training (DIT) in Kenya.

Facilities


The ITTC has made very remarkable expansion of its training facilities to enable the participants enjoy high quality training. From a humble 10 computers and no Internet in March 2001, the ITTC now has:

  • Four computer laboratories equipped with more than 70 state-of-the-art computers.

  • A computer-engineering lab for practical sessions for networking and PC repair and maintenance courses

  • A spacious and abundantly stocked library with more than 250 titles of the latest IT books and journals.

  • Full Internet connectivity.

Concepts of IT

Participants gain an in-depth look into the usage and Impact of computers in the modern society and the emerging trends in Information Technology.

Microsoft Office 2000 Suite

Covers all the office productivity applications in MS Office 2000 & XP. This course will also cover the Microsoft Windows operating system to ensure that the participant can be able to use a computer independently.

Each Application takes 1-3 weeks.

Desktop Publishing (DTP)

Provides the participant with extensive skills in creation of professional documents e.g. newsletters, brochures, manuals, flyers, and advertisements.

Integrated Computer Training

This course, offered as one package, is aimed at producing an all round computer user. The course provides the participant with skills in Concepts of IT, Microsoft Windows, MS Word, MS Excel, MS Access, Desktop Publishing, MS PowerPoint and Internet & E-Mail.

Project Management

This course will take the participants through all phases of project management right from Project conception to Project implementation and review using MS Project 2000.

Database design and development

The audience for this course are those who do not only wish to work with database applications, but also would like to understand database management systems such as SQL, Oracle etc.

Web design

Participants gain relevant and very applicable skills in the development and designing of a web page from its conception to implementation using DreamWeaver, VB Script and Java Script.

Java, C++ and Visual Basic Programming

Participants gain excellent software development skills using these three object-oriented languages that have become the industry standard.

Accounting application software

The audience for this course is accounts practitioners who would like to gain skills in the use of the latest accounting application software such as QuickBooks and Pastel.

Design

Provides you with skills in the design and illustration of objects and products using CorelDraw.

Certificate in IT

This is an entry point certification for those phpiring for a rewarding career in IT. It is a three-month course with the following minimum requirements: KCSE C- Or KCE Division III or the equivalent.

3 months.

Diploma in IT

This program is run in collaboration with the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT). This 18 months program provides a solid entry-point and foundation for your IT career path. On successful completion of the Diploma, one is eligible to join the JKUAT Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSc IT). The minimum requirements are: KCSE aggregate grade of C+, and minimum grade C in Mathematics and English.

18 months inclusive of a 12-week attachment.


IMIS

Administered by the Institute for the Management of Information Systems (IMIS) in UK is a premier certification that has a worldwide recognition. It is has a beginners level (Foundation Diploma), intermediate level (Diploma and Higher Diploma) and professional level (Graduate Diploma and BSc)

6 months - 12 months.


Linux for End-Users and Administrators

This course covers the Linux Operating System from the basics for a beginner to the most advanced features for system administrators. This course can also be tailored to any other version of Unix.

Windows NT and Windows 2000 for End-Users and Administrators

This course provides the participants with hands-on skills in these two operating systems from usage to the fundamentals of administration

PC Support Professional (A+)

The PC Support Professional program is aimed at giving the participants’ skills and competency in PC support and maintenance to support computer users in medium to large organisations.

Network Support Professional (N+)

The Network Support Professional program is aimed at giving the participants’ skills and competency in network support and administration.

8 weeks.

Diploma in IT and Certificate in IT courses are offered in collaboration with Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).


With the infrastructure already in place and the presence of goodwill amoung the management, faculty, staff and students, the Centre is confident that further development and consolidation of the ITTC will be attained to meet the challenges of this modern technological age.

I. T. Solutions Development

ITTC is also currently involved in the provision of ICT solutions in form of Management Information System. This involves Design, Development, Implementation and Maintenance of Management Information Systems such Project Monitoring and Evaluation, Health Management Information System among others.

Amongst our customers include the EAC Secretariat for whom we developed and implemented a Health Management Information System and SANA International (an NGO) for whom we designed, developed and implemented a Project Monitoring and Evaluation Management Information System.

Activities of The Resource Mapping Programme Training Schedule


Training


Under the Resource Mapping programme, the Centre has organized and run several short, medium and long-term courses for surveying and mapping professionals. These courses are for durations of one week for field surveyors and trainers who need a quick introduction to new technology; and two to four weeks for professionals who require detailed training to new technology. The later include cartographers and photogrammetrists who need training in Digital Mapping or Photogrammetry. Some of the courses in the programme include the following:

  • Fundamentals of Modern Land Surveying and Positioning Systems.

  • Modern Data Processing and Digital Data Bases Development for Land Surveyors.

  • Concepts of Management and land Law / Legal Principles for Surveyors,

  • Introduction to the principles Geomatics (Integrated course in RS, GIS and GPS)

During the past four years more than 100 surveying and mapping professionals have been trained.
